HELENA KAUPPILA: Perspective Shift | Cabinet exhibition

29.05. – 26.06.2021

Opening hours: Saturdays from 12 – 6 PM

Perspective Shift is a window into Helena Kauppila’s art and a starting point for the broader exhibit Klaus Haapaniemi Design and the Miettinen Collection.

A mathematician turned visual artist, Kauppila’s (1982) process reflects the habits of mind that a mathematician develops: precision of expression, skill in balancing intuition against rigorous logic, a facility for high-level abstraction, and the ability to modularize complex situations. Although Kauppila’s work is representational, she derives her understanding of representation from mathematics, which can get quite abstract. Her work reflects the order of the genome, structure of mathematical theories, and the visceral human connection to nature and intuitive experience. There is an attempt to negotiate the simultaneity of physical and intellectual space, of being an individual and functioning within a broader system. Kauppila remarks “I am primarily concerned with the surface structure and in creating a work that is able to communicate joy.”

Helena Kauppila was born in London in 1982 and grew up in Finland and the United States. Kauppila holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the California Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Columbia University. In addition, she is the recipient of the Reginald Marsh and Felicia Meyer Marsh scholarship at the Art Students League of New York, where she studied under Larry Poons and Anita Steckel. A solo exhibition of her work, Inside Infinity – In der Unendlichkeit, is currently on view at the Finland Institute in Germany in Berlin, where she is the Artist in residence for 2021.

Visits and guided tours are possible every Saturday between 12:00 and 18:00.

To ensure a safe visit for all, we follow the current hygiene regulations and ask you to wear a masks and to keep the safety distance of 1.5 m.
