Her figures wear bandages like armor, stride through surreal landscapes, and defy everything that stands in their way. They are hybrid beings, of indeterminate gender and age—canvases onto which viewers can project their own interpretations.
Born in Poland and living in Berlin since the early 1980s, the artist addresses personal and universal struggles in her work: the struggle for freedom, recognition, and self-assertion. Influenced by the expressive Berlin painting of the Junge Wilde, Guttmann combines raw energy with iconic composition. In addition to the paintings, the exhibition features independent black-and-white drawings that present the same powerful cast of characters in a reduced form.
