Surely we have all experienced the feeling of wanting to indulge ourselves after a hard week’s work. For example, by spending our hard-earned wages on a visit to the sauna or on a luxurious, gold-trimmed box of exquisite chocolates. Who doesn’t long for that feeling of tropical warmth or that magical moment when the silky-smooth chocolate melts on the tongue, promising paradisiacal happiness?

The Berlin artist Elisa Breyer provides a perfect example of this ad-worthy longing for kitschy escapism and well-earned reward after capitalistic enslavement in her work I tell you what I want, what I really, really want(2023). And suddenly we all feel caught – with a slightly ironic twinkle in our eye. It is precisely this that makes her work so exciting, so approachable, so humorous and above all so relatable. The pictures on view in the exhibition show people close to her with everyday characteristics that we are all familiar with, whom she stages in the style of a Madonna picture – in a sleek, realistic painting style and with glowing, harmonious colours.
